CLINTON — On the day before Easter, April 15, Clinton AMVETS Post 54 and Fisher AMVETS Post 52 joined forces for an awesome event.

For the past several years, the leaders of special picnic for the veterans at the Danville VA Hospital have been PDC Rudy Spaulding and the Fisher Post 52 members.  This year, Clinton Post 14 asked if they could team up to help.  It turned out to be a great day for all the veterans, both patients and Post members.

This year, six members from the Clinton AMVETS Post 14 went to help feed 120 patients, one of which included our their Post member Chucky Buck.  The cooking of the burgers and hotdogs was done on two hospital-supplied grills on opposite sides of the two dining halls.

Fisher brought the main menu items (burgers, hotdogs, sloppy-joes and potato salad) plus the desert – cherry and apple pies.  Post 14 arrived with several cases of cold sodas and bottled water.   The event started with cutting the 12 large pies into 12 slices, and then it was time for the meal to begin.

Some people may think that going to a hospital for a picnic is rather unusual, but AmVets members considered it very special.  The patients who are able to get around are brought to the dining halls by the hospital personnel; however, some meals are delivered to the rooms since those patients could not make the trip to the dining hall.

It was the smiles and thank -yous from the patients that made the day for the AMVET workers.  Members said it was a great success.
