CLINTON — Dan Ballenger Sr. of Clinton, recently received the American Red Cross Serving Central Illinois Public Service Award. Ballenger was unable to attend the organization’s recognition breakfast last year.
“Dan defines what it means to go above and beyond as, often, first on emergency scenes in his Clinton community to help rescue and care for people,” read the press information from the Red Cross.
His nominator, Dick Vogel, also of Clinton, said Ballenger sought specialized training administering CPR several times and staying with victims in those times of need.
“It could be medical calls, car accidents, or in recent days an hours-long standoff – Dan is there – because he cares about friends and neighbors around him – many he says he’s known his whole life,” said Vogel.
What does this kind of commitment turn into over the course of a year? More than 700 answered calls in Ballenger’s case.
The annual Saluting Our Heroes event pays tribute to those individuals or groups whose acts of kindness and courage align with the Red Cross mission and positively impact lives of others. Recipients are nominated by the public and selected by the Saluting Our Heroes event committee.
