SPRINGFIELD — Clinton AMVET Post #14 was represented this past weekend, June 8-10, at the 73rd Annual State AMVETS Convention in Springfield.

During the convention, there were numerous meetings, as there are conventions, awards, a banquet and election of new officers for the coming year.

The first evening was for preliminary meetings, and then Saturday began with the business of the convention.  This included the awarding of the post AMVET of the Year awards.

For Post #14, the award went to Ronald Frantz Jr. for his dedication to assisting the post in any way he can, driving from his home in Bloomington to attend post meetings, assist in honor guard duties and work the Maydays/July 4th/Apple n’ Pork food booths.

On Saturday evening the Stars and Stripes Banquet took place with a meal, an invited speaker and more awards.  This event was attended by four members of Post #14; Jessie Owens, Dennis Davenport, Marc Rogers and Darrel Tucker; and their invited guests Nancy and Scott Baum.  Baum Chevrolet/Buick was nominated by Post #14 for Business Contributor of the Year from AMVET District IV, which covers East Central Illinois.

Baum Chevrolet/Buick won, with Scott Baum receiving the award flanked by Post #14 attendees.  Also nominated for a scouting award was Clinton Troop #1142 scout Terry Hendriex who won the Illinois AMVETS Scout/Explorer Award for 2017-2018.  This award covers the entire state of Illinois.  This award will presented to Terry upon his return from a scouting jamboree.

On Sunday, the convention’s final day, the final nominations were held and the officers for the coming year were elected and sworn in.  This year Post #14 will not only be represented by post members here in Clinton but over the entire state.

Darrel Tucker of Post #14 was elected as AMVETS Department of Illinois Commander.  (See page A3)  He will travel the state representing AMVETS at post meetings, special events, and various state functions.

Darrel was sworn into office by the National First Vice Commander and was flanked by his wife Mitchi holding a family Bible on which Darrel placed his left hand while raising his right hand to take the oath of office.  Clinton Post #14 is proud to have one of its own rise to the top in the state AMVETS organization and to represent AMVETS in general all across the state.
