Blue Ridge baseball update

FARMER CITY — The last Blue Ridge Knights baseball updates from home games have been sparse due to the weather conditions.

Late in March, the Knights had an outing against the Mt. Pulaski Hilltoppers that turned out closer than expected.  The Hilltoppers hung on to come back to within one-run of a tie in the final two innings.

Blue Ridge was able to add another game in the win column, though with a 3-2 victory.  Caleb Trotter was the winning pitcher for Blue Ridge with 5 innings pitched, allowing 4 hits and 2 runs on two errors while striking out four batters and walking two.

The next update on the Knights came on Monday, April 10, when Blue Ridge faced the Gibson City/Melvin/Sibley Falcons.

The Falcons have been having a tough time getting in games also.  This outing would prove a rout for the home team Knights.  The Knights jumped to an early 2-run lead in the first that the Falcons cut into with a run in the second.  Blue Ridge then added 3 more runs over the 3rd and 4th innings to pad their lead.

The Falcons could only muster one more run in the sixth to end their scoring while the Knights added 3 more runs in the bottom of the 6th to seal their 8-2 win.

Blue Ridge is now 8-8 overall and 3-0 in the Heart of Illinois conference (HOIC).  GCMS falls to 3-5-1 and 0-3 in HOIC.  The winning pitcher for the Knights was Aaron Jayne (1-0) with 5 innings pitched allowing 2 hits and two runs with 2 errors while striking out 7 batters and walking seven, plus hitting 3 batters.  Dane Houser (2-3) and Alec Lyle (2-2) had quality at-bats for the Knights.  In the fifth inning, Lyle hit a 2 run homer into a 20 m.p.h. wind to aid the Knights cause.
