CLINTON — Clinton Police Chief Ben Lowers reported on Monday the newly permitted operation of golf carts on city streets is going well so far.  Lowers gave his report during the regular city council meeting.

“As of today, everything has gone very smooth so far,” Lowers told commissioners. 

Applications for golf cart permits can be made Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-4 p.m. at city hall. 

“These are the hours right now as we clarify the process we’re going to use,” Lowers said.  Individuals can pick up a permit application at the police department. 

Applicants fill out the form and take it with proof of liability insurance and their cart to the police department.

“We conduct an inspection of all safety equipment, and then we issue them a permit.”

Residents applying for a permit will be allowed to drive the carts to the police department for inspection as long as they also carry proof of insurance and all safety requirements are met.

Lowers said he had received several questions about what happens if a golf cart owner trades carts.  He said if a resident trades one cart for another, the owner’s registration will transfer to the new cart.

If an owner sells a cart, “it will require a new registration and a new inspection,” Lowers said.

He said the department wanted to ensure that the required safety equipment was on the cart when the new owner registers for a permit.

In other city business, the council approved the following:

• Sale of personal property from the sewer department (1999 Jeep)

• Sale of personal property from the police department (handguns, shotguns, ammunition)

• Water tower cleaning contract with Difco, Inc.

• A $97,808 bid from Illiana Construction for the 2020 MFT (Motor Fuel Tax) fund street summer maintenance program

• A supplemental resolution to the summer maintenance program at $7,500

• Replacement of HVAC system condenser and A-coil at the police department not to exceed $15,000
