CHS cross country athletes compete in state finals

CLINTON — The Lady Maroons’ and the Maroons’  cross country teams had several individuals athletes go from Central Illinois Conference placings to qualifying for the state finals this season. 

Those qualifying during the sectional race were Drew Moser (ending a 22-year state drought <23 years="" for="" individuals=""> for the boys team.  Drew finished 12th overall, and was the #5 qualifier running a time of 15:57.02.

These three moved on to the state finals in Class 1A on Saturday, November 5.  It was a Saturday with torrential rain and wind making running a challenge on a sloppy course.  But, the Maroons battled through to make a good showing. 

Girls and boys had 258 entrants.  MaKayla Koeppel placed 67th in a time of 19:36.15.  She was predicted to finish 85th and finished 92nd in last seasons run.  Amerie Hemphill placed 110th with a time of 20:01.37.  She had an incredible finishing kick passing over 10 runners to earn her place.  Drew Moser placed 107th in a time of 17:07.36 making him the eighth highest boy finisher at the state finals in Clinton history.
