CLINTON — One of the early school year sports in Maroon country is golf. The Clinton High School golf team has taken off this season with some fair success but also is looking for improvement.
The team is under the direction of long time assistant coach Clint Lichtenwalter, starting this season with Nate Ennis as his assistant. They are hoping to keep the team on an even keel, working on fundamentals and consistency.
The team began the season at the Urbana Invite shooting a combined 427 for 12th place. Charleston took top honors shooting a 300. The meet medalist was Ben Lanman from Charleston with a 71. Clinton’s Chase Reynolds came in 4th with a 76.
Next on the agenda was a triangular meet in Monticello against Monticello and Maroa-Forsyth/Warrensburg-Latham (MF/WL). Clinton (176) lost to Monticello (171), but beat MF/WL (182). At this meet, Chase Reynolds took the medalist honors with a 37.
After Monticello the Maroons traveled to Fox Prairie golf course in Windsor to face Shelbyville and Ramsey in another triangular meet. Again Maroons were in the middle with a one shot loss to Shelbyville (186), yet beating Ramsey (205). Keeping his focus again, Maroon Chase Reynolds took medalist honors with a score of 37.
For their last road trip before coming home, the Maroons headed to the Lincoln Elk’s Golf Club for a 5 Man Scramble. Clinton came in 11th with a score of 67, while Bloomington finished first with a 55, followed by El Paso/Gridley second with 58, and Champaign Centennial and Williamsville tied for third at 61.
Finally the Maroons landed a triangular meet at their home course at the Clinton Country Club. This meet was with Arcola and OKAW Valley. The Maroons seem to like the middle slot in triangulars as OKAW Valley (171 and a record of 8-0) won followed by Clinton (201 with a record of 3-3) and Arcola (224 with a 0-2 record).
Chase Reynolds of the Maroons kept his hot clubs swinging with another 37 for medalist honors taking him to 3 for 3 as match medalist.
