CLINTON — On January 12, the Clinton Maroon wrestling team went to the mats against the El Paso/Gridley Titans in the first round of a meet and then faced the St. Joseph/Ogden Spartans.
First up against the Titans, the Maroons won the first two matches handily, and then took a nose dive allowing the Titans to throw down a 33-22 lead with three matches remaining.
Clinton took the next two matches with pins to retake the lead 39-33. The fun then began as the final match went to the Titans on a pin, tying the meet at 39 points each.
The officials and coaches then conferred at the scorers table to check the rule book as to the solution to the situation. The new and revised rules provided the solution.
The team that scored the most first points in their matches (even if in a loss) would win. Fortunately, the Clinton team was more aggressive in its matches, so took the most first points and were awarded the win 40-39.
Next on the agenda, was the face-off with the St. Joseph/Ogden Spartans. The hometown Maroons seemed to be handling this match well, maintaining the lead until about three quarters of the way through the meet.
The Spartans took a slim lead with three matches remaining. The lead changed two more times before the last match was forfeited by the Spartans, giving the Maroons the outright win, 33-28. Thus, the Maroons came away with two hotly contested wins.
Also on the night, the senior wrestling athletes were recognized. Those leaving the team this year due to graduation are Christian Reynolds and Kolby Winter.
