City council recognizes late Mayor Stites

“ He always had the best interests of the city at heart.”

-Tom Edmunds

Clinton City Council

CLINTON — Commissioner Tom Edmunds remembered former Clinton Mayor Stan Stites during the regular city council meeting Monday.  Stites died May 15.

“Stan was in his second term as mayor during my first term on the council,” Edmunds said.  Edmunds later would go on to serve as mayor.

Edmunds said Stites “always had the best interests of the city at heart.”

In 1987, as Stites was in the hospital suffering a heart attack, he made a point of making sure Edmunds knew he would have to take over as mayor for a while.  Stites had Edmunds’ sister, who was a physician in Clinton at the time, make sure to relay the message.

“He had me call you first,” Edmunds said his sister told him.

“So he always had city interests right up there,” Edmunds said.  “We’ll sure miss him.  The best thing you can say about Stan; he was a good man.”

Mayor Roger Cyrulik also pointed out that Stites and his wife Helen played an important role in the Lincoln Heritage Committee.
