CJHS Lady Maroons fall to Lady Hornets despite strong play

Posted

CLINTON — On Thursday, August 5, the Clinton Junior High School (CJHS) Lady Maroons softball team started its fall season.  Facing the Lady Maroons was the Lady Hornets, of Heyworth.

Turnout for the Clinton this season has been strong, with 21 young ladies making the team.

The first (or “varsity”) game started off well with the Lady Maroons drawing first blood with two runs in the second inning on three hits and a walk.  The lead was short lived though, as the Lady Hornets answered with 5 runs of their own in the bottom of the third inning.

The fourth inning saw the Lady Maroons add another run, only to be topped by the opposition adding 4 more runs.  The fifth inning was another shootout with both teams again scoring, Clinton with two runs and Heyworth with three runs.

The Lady Maroons then added their final score in the sixth inning to cap off all scoring.  The Lady Maroons did not give up, but on this afternoon they were out-gunned by the opposition, taking a 12-6 loss in their first outing of the season.  The Lady Maroons were led by Mylie Alwood (2-3, two singles), and Anelise Thompson (3-4, 2 singles and a triple).

The “junior varsity” followed the first game with a shortened three-inning game due to time constraints.

In the match-up the Lady Maroons took the early lead with a run in the second inning, followed by another in the third.  But, the Lady Hornets again became the spoilers, scoring 2 runs of their own in the third inning to tie the game.  The second game ended in a 2-2 tie.

The CJHS boys baseball team started play this week against Bloomington Junior High and on August 20, the high school will hold its “Meet the Maroons” night at Sprague Field starting at 4 p.m.
