CLINTON — On Tuesday, the CJHS boys’ basketball teams faced the Central A&M (CAM) Raiders, who in the previous week rousted all three Clinton High School teams.  This was also recognition night for the eighth grade CJHS athletes.

The first quarter was a real sleeper, as the Maroons took the lead 2-0.  From there, the Maroons kept the pressure on to maintain a lead at halftime of 9-6.

There was little major scoring throughout the remainder of the game with Clinton keeping its lead at 15-10 in the third and wining with a final score of 17-13.

The Maroons were led by Nick Feather (#24) with six points and Dawson Graves with 5 points.  Rounding out the scoring were Brooks Cluver (#4) with 4 points and Mason Walker (#1) with two points.  The bigger highlight of this first game was the fact that, with this win, the seventh grade team won the conference championship for the first time in school history.

During the intermission between the games, this year’s 8th grade athletes were presented for recognition.  The volleyball team was away, but the other athletes and their parents were given the floor in recognition of their hard work and diligent study.

The ensuing 8th grade game woke the entire crowd as it started badly for the Maroons, but became a barn burner.

The Maroons played the first quarter in slow motion ending up down 15-5 at the start of the second quarter.

With the onset of the 2nd quarter, the Maroons settled into a rhythm and began to work their way back into the game.  At halftime the Maroons trailed by only 6 points 20-14.

The second half was a struggle to keep even and then break into the lead.  The third quarter ended with Clinton down by one point and gaining momentum.

The crowd was wholly involved as the teams battled back and forth, the lead changing several times, but it was the shear determination of the Maroons team and some very clutch play that put them over the top and kept them there for a 34-31.

The Maroons were led by Trevor Scott with 12 points and given a boost by Deonne Greer’s clutch 3-point shot in the fourth quarter and Trevor Scott’s four free throws in the second half.  Seth Varble also jumped in scoring 4 in the final quarter.
