CLINTON — The Clinton Eagles Lodge 593 recently hosted the ninth annual Poker Run fund raiser in support of AMVETS Post 14 and, ultimately, veterans.
There were over 40 bikes and four cars that traversed the terrain of Central Illinois. Awards were given for the bike that came the farthest distance – Chicago, and the “coolest lookin’” bike.
The riders made four stops and drew a card from a deck, hopefully to get the best poker hand, with the winner receiving the entry-fee funds. The two winners were both the poker winner, with a full house, and, of course the veterans.
After the run, a silent, followed by a live, auction was held for the goods donated by over 50 business from all around the area, including Lincoln, Decatur, Bloomington and Clinton. The live auction was conducted by a local auctioneer in training.
The day finished with a meal. Pork chops (donated by the Eagles) were prepared over a charcoal pit by two AMVETS, cheesy potatoes and delicious green beans were donated and prepared by Jim and Kathy Schmedeke, and a variety of deserts were prepared by the AMVET wives.
AmVets thanked everyone who participated and contributed to the event. With the special support of the Eagles Lodge, 593 and all those in attendance, $3,000 was raised to allow the AMVETS Post 14 help local Veterans as well as those in the VA Hospitals.
