g an opportunity to establish a branch of its operation in the nearby city of Monticello, executive director Rennie Cluver said.
Representatives from Monticello have already created an advisory committee and, according to Cluver, have been pursuing the idea of opening a Y facility in their community for some time.
The city of Monticello has a population of approximately 5,500 and is part of the Clinton YMCA district.
“At this time, Y USA is not providing any new charters,” explained Cluver, so any new Y facilities are branches from established Y operations.
Cluver said the Y would conduct a market analysis of the Monticello community to determine needs as well as facility size and more.
Kirby Medical Center in Monticello has expressed interest in being involved and its grounds offer an ideal location for a fitness facility, Cluver said.
“The number one reason is to help fill the gaps where they need assistance,” he said. “We know how great it is to fill needs in a community.”
Cluver said the addition of the Monticello branch would offer opportunities for different programming, expansion of programming and collaboration on programs.
To date, Cluver said the Monticello advisory board has expressed needs for a before and after childcare program as well as youth sports.
If and when the Monticello facility is built, Clinton Y members would be able to access it at any time for no additional cost, said Cluver.
“If someone works closer to Monticello, they may choose to exercise at the Monticello Y.”
Before the project can move forward, Y USA must give its final approval and Cluver said that wouldn’t happen until after the market analysis has been completed and reviewed. Cluver anticipates that won’t come any earlier than August or September of this year.
In the meantime, the Clinton Y is planning to update and modernize its facility, Cluver said. This will include new paint and flooring and some remodeling.
