CLINTON — Clinton AMVETS Post 14 recently received another boost toward its mission of “Veterans Helping Veterans” from Exelon. A check for $1,000 was presented to the Post Commander, Marc Rogers, by fellow AMVET Ed Beck, who represented Exelon, as they stood in front of the plant simulator. Over the Post 14 fiscal year, the employees at Clinton Power Station (CPS) and Exelon have contributed almost $3,000 to Post 14 to help the Post support veterans and community functions.
To give a good perspective of how Post 14 uses the money, over the last fiscal year, September 2016 to the present, AMVETS Post 14 has given monetary donations to the Veterans totaling over $5,000.00. This money has been provided to both Veteran Hospital patients and local Veterans in need. In total, the Post money comes from contributions like Exelon, community business donations, and individual donations. In addition to contributions, the Post members work at fund-raising during annual community events like May Days, July 4th Celebration, Post 14 motorcycle Poker-Run at the Eagles, and, of course, the Apple & Pork Festival. In addition to monetary assistance, Post 14 has donated over 600 hours of membership time supporting Veteran and community functions, which equates to a value of over $15,000.00!
Most recently, the Post has been working with a very generous donor to establish an AMVETS Post 14 Scholarship Fund. It is planned to award these scholarships to local high school graduates (with special consideration for children or grandchildren of Veterans) who want to continue their education at a university, a junior college or a trade school. Scholarship applications will be available in the spring of next year (2018), and the scholarships will be awarded to individuals based on financial need, academics and other relevant criteria, with the applications evaluated by the Post 14 Scholarship Committee. More information on these scholarships will be available at the start of the 2017 – 2018 school year and coordinated with the Clinton High School administration and guidance department.
If any Veteran wants to help Post 14 with its efforts, he/she can join AMVETS as long as he or she is either in active military service or was Honorably Discharged from the military. Post 14 is located just behind the new Save-A-Lot store at 302 North Monroe Street in Clinton, and meets at 7:00 PM on the second Monday of every month. We invite Vets to come check us out!
