CLINTON — Flag Day also was the 76th wedding anniversary of a Clinton couple who eloped to Old Monroe, Mo. in 1941. It was a celebration of life for a life long Clinton resident, Robert (Bob) Lighthall.
Early afternoon on June 14, a number of Lighthall’s close family members gathered at the Veteran’s Point Memorial to remember Bob on what would have been the 76th Anniversary of his marriage to Mary Gertrude(Gussie) Gustafson. The combination of emotions was strong as memories of Bob and Gussie were amplified with the pride that was represented by the memorial and the love of America reflected in Flag Day. A generational passing was taking place during the simple remembrance.
The spirits of folks who had given their best for the country they loved were silently hoping their legacy would not be in vain. And the gathered family was there to remember a man and his wife who were part of that legacy.
