CLINTON — A tie race from the April Wapella election was decided this week in the county clerk’s office. In a high card draw, Sherry Mears (PEO) became the winner over Reggie Westfall (CIT) in a race for a 4-year term as a trustee on the village board.
The two candidates were tied at 90 votes each after absentee ballots were tallied this past week. In the past, DeWitt County Clerk Dana Smith had decided a tie race in a county board election by the flip of a coin.
This time, with a neutral party setting up a deck of cards, all jokers and aces were removed and each candidate drew one card. Mears became the victor, drawing a king to Westfall’s 3.
Smith said they chose this method to eliminate deciding who would call in a coin toss.
