CLINTON — In the year of regional tournaments for Clinton High School (CHS), the Lady Maroons were the second team to start the post season on their home court (the boys basketball will arrive in two weeks).
The ladies were ranked 7th in the tournament and began play against the 8th ranked team, the Mahomet-Seymour Lady Bulldogs. The Lady Maroons held tough in the first quarter, trailing by only three points at the buzzer.
The game began to fall apart for the home team in the second quarter as the Lady Bulldogs tenaciously picked apart the home team defense for an 18-8 run that the Lady Maroons could not recover from. The third quarter was sluggish for both teams and the final stanza seemed to be on cruise-control as the Lady Bulldogs took the win 54-31, ending the Lady Maroons season at 16-14.
The Lady Maroons were led by Madelyn Stevens with 12 points, followed by Kaitlyn Rauch with 8 points, Mallory Cyrulik with 6 points, Destiny Schlesinger with 3 points (on a 3-point basket), and both Kaile Beck and Ryty Dupont-Barlow scoring a point each on free throws. Wade and Northrup were the downfall for the Lady Maroons as these two combined for 27 points (including 2 3-point baskets each) to lead the Bulldogs.
The Lady Maroons have a bright outlook for the future with only three seniors leaving the team and a base of seven freshmen and sophomores for the coming years.
