CLINTON — Saturday, May 27 brought the final game of the IHSA Class 3A Regional Tournament here at Clinton High School’s center softball diamond.
The hometown Lady Maroons played against the Rochester Lady Rockets. The Maroons were the visiting team as Rochester had the higher ranking in the tournament.
The Lady Maroons seemed up to the task as they loaded the bases and plated 3 runs in the top of first inning aided by 5 Rochester errors. Then Rochester came back with two runs of their own in the bottom of the inning, leaving Clinton with a one-run lead.
This would not last, though, as the Lady Rockets settled in and the Lady Maroons began to derail. The Lady Maroons mustered only 3 more hits in the game while the Lady Rockets were firing on all cylinders.
Rochester scored 3 runs in the second inning, two more in the third and capped the game off with 4 runs in the sixth inning for the 11-3 regional championship win.
Offensively, Aspyn Taylor and Destiny Schlessinger led the way with 2-4 hitting by each. Olivia Sanders struggled from the ring tossing only 5 strikeouts after averaging two strikeouts an inning in the Lady Maroons previous game win.
Although the Lady Maroons committed fewer errors, they came at the most inopportune times, allowing the Lady Rockets to add to their run total.
The loss ended the Lady Maroons season.
