CLINTON — On Wednesday, April 12, the Lady Maroons played two games, varsity and junior varsity (JV), with the Monticello Lady Sages.
Monticello has been an ever-present thorn in the side of Lady Maroons softball for many years. This afternoon of softball would help to mend wounds.
The Lady Maroons took command early with four runs in the first inning. This proved to be enough as the Lady Sages could muster only 2 runs in the third inning. Clinton answered with another run of their own in the bottom of the third and then finished off the scoring with 3 runs in the sixth inning to take an 8-2 win.
Olivia Sanders pitched a complete game for the Lady Maroons who were lead offensively by Ryty Dupont-Barlow with 3-4 hitting with 2 singles, a double and scored 2 runs.
In the second (JV) game, Clinton again took an early 2-0 lead in the first, but Monticello retaliated with two runs of their own in the second inning.
Then in the fourth, the Lady Maroons mounted an offense that produced one more run to regain the lead. However, the Lady Sages, in a last gasp scored the tying run in the top of the fifth and final inning.
The Maroons were unable to answer and the time shortened game ended in a 3-3 tie.
Mackenzie Armstrong started the game for the home team with Josie Boyer coming on in relief. The Lady Maroons were lead offensively by Destiny Schlesinger hitting 2-2 and scoring 2 runs, and Zoie Polen who hit an inside the park home run in the first inning.
