Lady Maroons move into regionals with wins

CLINTON — In their next to last regular season home game, the Lady Maroons softball team took a tough loss to the St. Joseph-Ogden Lady Spartans.

The Lady Spartans controlled the game from the first inning taking a 1-0 lead.  From there, it was a pitchers’ duel until the opposition scored another run for a 2-0 lead.

In the seventh and final inning the Lady Spartans tagged on two more runs.  The home team was able to plate one run in the bottom of the seventh, but it was just too little too late.

The loss was also tough because the Lady Maroons out hit their opponents 8-5 but were unable to plate the runs.

Savanah Clifton and Raymi Dial were 2 of 3 at the plate with Zoie Polen, Olivia Sanders (who pitched all 7 innings in the loss), Amanda Tool, and Elly Maier rounded out the hitting.

The team then took a road trip to attack the Rochester Lady Rockets.  The Lady Maroons wasted little time with the Lady Rockets jumping to a 3-0 lead in the first inning.

The Lady Maroons then added a fourth run in the fourth inning to hopefully seal the game.  Mackenzie Armstrong pitched well for the Lady Maroons allowing 4 hits and 2 walks while the defense held the opposition to 2 runs, scored in the 6th inning.

Clinton was able to capitalize on its own four hits to create the winning 4 runs, winning 4-2.

Destiny Schlesinger led the Lady Maroons with 2 of 4 hitting, followed by Zoie Polen and Mackenzie Armstrong with the other two hits.

On Saturday, May 19, the Lady Maroons faced the Normal University High (U High) Lady Pioneers in their final regular season game.  Clinton began the scoring in the third on a single by Ellie Maier, who then stole second and was advanced on a Lady Pioneer error and a ground out by Zoie Polen.

U High then caught up in the fifth inning scoring a run on a Clinton error and a single.  A pitchers’ duel then continued through 7 innings.

Finally, in the bottom of the eighth, Camden Alsup walked and was subsequently driven home by a walk-off triple by Destiny Schlesinger for a Lady Maroon win, 2-1.

Olivia Sanders pitched the entire game for the Lady Maroons, giving up one run on eight hits in eight innings while striking out seven and walking none.

Coming back with two wins after a tough loss bodes well for the Lady Maroons entering regionals and sectionals in the coming weeks.  Clinton will face the Springfield Southeast Lady Spartans, and upon passing that test will again face the Rochester Lady Rockets.
