Lady Maroons’ teams open season in big way

CLINTON — Not only have the boys basketball teams hit the hardwood, but the Lady Maroons also have returned to play.

Their first home stand was against the Cerro Gordo/Bement Lady Broncos, a usually tough opponent.

The evening began with the junior varsity (JV) game, during which the Lady Maroons had a sluggish start.  The home team scored half the points of the visitors in the first quarter but came back in the second quarter to go into the locker room at half time down by only one point.

The second half saw the Lady Maroons take the lead and never look back.  At the end of the third quarter the home team held onto a one-point lead which converted into an 8-point lead at game’s end with the Lady Maroons winning 34-26.  Heidi Humble led the home team with 15 points.

The varsity Lady Maroons were next up and did not hesitate to flex their basketball muscle.

They took a 12-0 lead in the first quarter and kept the pressure on throughout the game.  The Lady Maroons hit the locker room at halftime with a 31- 8 lead.

The Lady Broncos were able to score a few more points in the second half but not enough to be worrisome.

The Lady Maroons took the win 56-19.  The Lady Maroons were led by Mallory Cyrulik (21 points) and Kaitlyn Rauch (15 points).  Seven of 10 Lady Maroons scored.

For the Lady Broncos, the top scorer was Jazzie Hicks with 6 points and only 5 of 13 opposition players were able to score.
