Lady Maroons’ teams win big over Meridian on Senior Night

CLINTON — The Meridian Lady Hawks were in town Feb. 7 to challenge the Lady Maroons. The cold weather, plus the fact it was Senior Night in Clinton, must have worked some magic spell for the Lady Maroons.
The junior varsity (JV) teams started the festivities with a slow-moving struggle as neither team seemed to be able to put the ball into the basket. At the end of the first quarter the Lady Hawks led 2-0.
The second quarter saw a better outcome, at least for the home fans, as the Lady Maroons went on a 13-0 scoring run to totally deflate the Lady Hawks.
But, there must have been some reinflating words said at halftime because the opposition hit the floor running to outscore the home team by 3 points but not enough to cause concern as the Lady Maroons mustered a 12-4 run of their own in the fourth quarter to easily down Meridian 32-16.
Alaina Soberalski (#24) led the Lady Maroons with 10 points (including two 3-point buckets). Lanie Helfand (#20) also had two 3-pointers 8 points total) and Regan Filkin (#3) added another 3-pointer with 7 points total.
The first game was just a warm up to the ensuing varsity match up. The Lady Hawks had fresh players with only a few from the JV team. Clinton, however, had the whole JV team playing with the leadership of three seniors in their final regular season game of their high school careers.
The Lady Maroons varsity hit the floor running, taking a 17-2 lead into the second quarter. The Lady Hawks fluttered around and were able to add 6 points in the second quarter, while the home team laid in another 17 points.
Coming out after halftime, the opposition had its best quarter, scoring 7 points. Unfortunately for them, the Lady Maroons added 14 more points to their score.
The fourth quarter was the final shot that brought the Lady Hawks to the ground as they scored no points, while the home team added another 10 to their score.
The final tally was Lady Maroons 58, Lady Hawks 15.
The Lady Maroons were led by none other than the exiting seniors. Mallory Cyrulik (#4) led the way with 21 points, followed by Kaitlyn Rauch (#11) with 17 points (including four 3-pointers) and Kylie Raymer (#34) with six points on two 3-pointers.
Cyrulik and Rauch complete their careers at Clinton High School (CHS) as members of the 1,000 point club (Mallory has the highest number of points scored during a CHS career) and Cyrulik is also a member of the 1,000 rebound club.
