CHARLESTON — This past weekend, the IHSA (Illinois High School Association) State Track & Field finals took place at Eastern Illinois University.

The Clinton Lady Maroons had two competitors who qualified for the finals this year.  They were Claudia Workman in shot put and Payne Turney in the 800-meter run.

This was the first time in school history that these to events have been represented at state.

Claudia had to throw indoors (first time the event has been held indoors in the 25 year history of the IHSA tournament) due to the weather.

It didn’t seem to bother her, though, throwing her second best lifetime toss of 38 feet- 1 inch for the semifinal and final to capture 11th place.

Payne was able to compete outdoors and ran her second fastest time in the 800-meter run at 2:20.97 in the semifinal and qualifying for the finals.  She ran a 2:20.21 in the finals (a new second best time) to reach the podium in ninth place and become a state medalist.
