CLINTON — The Lady Maroons came into the New Year pumped up from a third place win in the Riverton Holiday Tournament. Their first opponent of the year was arch rival, the Tri-Valley Lady Vikings.
The home team junior varsity (JV) was pleasantly surprised to take a 5-point lead in the first quarter and led by 12 at halftime. Maintaining a 10-point lead through the third quarter, the Lady Maroons exploded for 13 points in the final stanza to win by 22, 40-18.
The JV was led by Kaitlyn Rauch with 15 points, Jayd Rich with 9 points and Raya Swartz with 7.
This would normally bode well for the varsity, however, this season the Lady Maroons varsity is the junior varsity plus three, so they start a little winded. Some may look at this as a disadvantage, but the Lady Maroons have risen to the challenge. They have become stronger physically and have bonded into a cohesive force mentally.
The ladies again hit the hardwood to grab a slight 5-point lead in the initial quarter of play. The second quarter saw a little fatigue set in as the Lady Vikings took the lead by 7 at the half.
In the second half, the Lady Maroons showed their moxie by retaking the lead in the third and adding a 15-7 run in the fourth to win the game 52-42.
The Lady Maroons had two players in double figures leading the way in Madelyn Stevens with 12 and Ryty Dupont-Barlow with 11. There were also five other Lady Maroons in the scoring column.
