Lady Maroons’ volleyball in action

CLINTON —  The Lady Maroons are still toughing out a rebuilding season.  Some nights they win outright, some they split and others are not so good.

But the ladies are becoming a team, working together and supporting each other on all plays (volleys).  The team has had only three home matches lately and have one final home match on Senior Night, October 18.

All three teams (freshman, junior varsity and varsity) will play in the final match of the regular season.  The teams will be matched with the Meridian Hawks teams.

As for the matches played, the Lady Maroons started with the Central A&M Lady Raiders with mixed results.  The freshman team split sets with the opposition winning the first set, but then trailed the entire second set seeming to loose their fire for the game.

The junior varsity then stepped onto the court in a 3 set battle.  Although starting slowly, the team battled back in the first set to lose by three points.  They then hung tough in the second set taking a win by two points.

The third set was all Raiders as they came out firing on all cylinders to take the match 2 sets to one.

Last on the agenda was the varsity, which had their hands full.  The first set could have gone either way, but the Lady Maroons hung tough and eked out a two point win.  Then in the second set, the home team caught fire and raced to a 25-15 win for the 2-0 match win.

Next on the agenda was a junior varsity (JV) and varsity match-up with the Sullivan Lady Redskins.  This evening was a walk-in-the-park for the home teams.  the JV team won the first set by over 15 points, but let the Lady Redskins close in during the second set by committing some costly mental errors.  However the home team prevailed (by 2 points) to take the win in two sets 2-0.  The Lady Maroon varsity would have none of the drama in their match as they took the first set by 13 points and the second by 17 points, a quick 2-0 match win.

The Lady Maroons then matched up against the Lady Rams of Shelbyville.  The freshmen teams led off the evening with the Lady Rams in control.  The Lady Maroons were tough in the first set trailing by only 2 points, however, the second set was all Lady Rams, taking the match 2-0.  The Lady Maroons JV team seemed to have been somewhere else than on the court as they dropped their sets by 9 and 14 points respectively for a 2-0 loss.

The final run of the night was with the varsity squads taking the court.  The Lady Rams came out on top in the hard fought first set by two points.  The second set saw the Lady Maroons catch fire, winning the set by 9 points to tie and force a tie breaking set.  This promised to be an exciting finish to the evenings events, however the Lady Maroons took to the court flat and off their game, letting the Lady Rams build a lead that they never relinquished.

Shelbyville took the varsity Match 2-1.
