CLINTON — LaRue Norton Hicks, 87, of Clinton, passed away at 11:19 a.m. on November 13, 2019, at Manor Court, Clinton.  Services were conducted at 2 p.m. on November 17, 2019, at The Church In The Pines Presbyterian Church, Laurel Hill, N.C., directed by Norton Funeral Home, Hartsville, S.C., with Pastor Crystal Blue officiating.  Burial was at Hillside Memorial Cemetery, Laurinburg, N.C.

LaRue was born on December 17, 1931, in Scotland County, North Carolina, the daughter of the late Elwood and Sallie Laird Norton.  She was a member of The Church In The Pines Presbyterian Church, Laurel Hill, N.C. She married Charlie Rudolph Hicks on April 15, 1951, in Laurel Hill, N.C.  Rudolph preceded her in death on November 7, 2006. Also preceding her in death was one sister, Marilyn Edell Norton.

Survivors include her son, Charlie Rudolph (Inez) Hicks Jr. , Clinton; her daughter, Kayrl Laird (Mike) Chapman, Clinton; her daughter, Shawn Lynnette (Keith) Holland, Zebulon, N.C.; her son, Kevin Lee (Tami) Hicks, Moses Lake, Wash.; her brother, William Eldridge (Eydie) Norton, Hartsville, S.C.; eight grandchildren, Jason, Justin and Ryan Hicks, Trevor Chapman, Haley Bevans, Carlyn Holland, Kevin Hicks, Jr., and Zach Hicks;  16 great-grandchildren, one nephew and two nieces.

LaRue was a homemaker until her children were all in junior high school, at which time she became a bookkeeper for Baum Chevrolet-Buick in Clinton.  After she and Rudolph returned to North Carolina in 1976, she held a bookkeeping job with two other automobile dealerships. 

LaRue always felt her most important jobs were being a wife and mother.  

She was an accomplished seamstress, making clothes for all her children and a lot of friends. When an outfit was made for the girls, a matching one was always made for the Barbie doll.  Best dressed Barbies in town. LaRue was an avid reader and loved to play card and board games.  She loved to shop and go out to eat with her best friends.
