CLINTON - Members of the Lincoln Heritage Committee of DeWitt County recently donated two books to the Vespasian Warner Public Library.

The first book,  “Lincoln and the Power of the Press: The War for Public Opinion,” was written by Harold Holzer. NYTimes.com:  “Abraham Lincoln has been portrayed in many roles — as emancipator, politician, military leader, orator, self-made man and others — but his canny manipulation of the popular press has received little attention. Harold Holzer, a prominent authority on America’s 16th president, opens many vistas on this fascinating topic in his new book, Lincoln and the Power of the Press, a monumental, richly detailed portrait of the world of 19th-century journalism and Lincoln’s relation to it. Holzer demonstrates that even as Lincoln juggled many war-related demands, he kept a close eye on American newspapers and tried to influence them however he could.”

The second book donated was “Lincoln: Biography of a Writer,” by Fred Kaplan.  “A fine, invaluable book . . .Certain to become essential to our understanding of the 16th president . . .Kaplan meticulously analyzes how Lincoln’s steadily maturing prose style enabled him to come to grips with slavery and, as his own views evolved, to express his deepening opposition to it.” — Jonathan Yardley, The Washington Post Book World”

Over the past few years, LHC has donated several books about Abraham Lincoln and his life to the Library for the public to read, learn about Lincoln, and enjoy.
