Maroons destroy the Knights in home showdown

CLINTON — Tournaments, along with previous regionals and sectionals, keep growing here in Clinton.  This year’s showdown involved 10 teams from around Central Illinois, each playing one game, for show.

No round robin for a trophy or rankings, just 10 teams playing basketball.  Blue Ridge (Farmer City) played Peoria Heights; Peoria Christian faced Seneca; Rochester took on Heyworth; Eureka battled Maroa/Forsyth; and the touted “Big Finale” was Clinton’s Maroons on the hardwood with Calvary Christian Academy (Normal) Knights.

From the start the outcome was apparent.  With Clinton’s “flex” press and swarming defense at work, the opposition was amiss.  At the end of the first quarter, the score was 20-3 in favor of the Maroons.

The highest the Knights could score in a quarter was 9 points.  The halftime score was 37-12 in favor of the home team.

In the second half, the starters were spelled off and on by players from the bench with no let up in scoring as the Maroons added another 14 points to end the third quarter with a 30-point lead.  With a 30 point lead, the clock does not stop until the game ends, not even for time outs.

The Maroons backed off in the fourth quarter but still destroyed the Knights 59-26.

The Maroons were led by Brooks Cluver (#12) with 15 points and Mason Walker (#3) with 12 points (including two 3-pointers).
