Maroons dominate Raiders at all levels in three-team wins

CLINTON — On Friday, January 12, the Clinton Maroons tackled a triple header evening with the Central A&M Raiders.

It turned out to be a hot night of play for the Maroons.

The first game of the evening began with the freshman teams facing off.  The freshmen hit the floor running on all cylinders creating a 22-7 lead at the half and a 37-7 lead at the end of the third stanza.  The Raiders finally had something to say in the fourth quarter, scoring a second 7 points.  Clinton was giving the bench some court time and they added 4 points for a final win of 41-14.

The junior varsity (JV) team then appeared before the crowd and started their play.  Central A&M took the tip-off and immediately drained a 3-point bucket.  This put Clinton on the comeback fight to hold its own and keep within striking distance.

The Maroons fought back for a short lead in the first quarter but were down by one at the buzzer.  The Maroons came out in the second quarter with more determination on defense and opened up on offense, going on a 10-2 run.

The Maroons had learned how to control the Raider big men under the baskets, controlling the rebounds better to keep the pressure on.  The third quarter was hard-fought with the Maroons able to build a little more onto their lead.  The final quarter saw the Maroons again hold off the Raiders big-play players in a 15-3 onslaught that gave the home round-ballers a 47-26 win.

The main attraction of the evening was the Maroons and Raiders varsities matching up on the hardwood of Vance Gymnasium.

The Raiders were fired up with the Maroons getting the tip and then missing two scoring attempt, and the quarter then went to the Raiders 11-8.  Staying within range of the hustling Raiders was a task the Maroons met head on, but still trailing by 4 at the half.

Returning from the locker room the Maroons changed their defense to pressing and use varied defenses under the basket.  This caused the Raiders some confusion and forced errors, which the Maroons capitalized upon.  Clinton went from 4 down to three up in the third quarter.

The Maroons then were able to keep control of the game for a 50-40 win.

Although the Raiders had two players in double figures, the rest of their team chipped in very little.  The Maroons were led by Chase Reynolds with 16 points, 9 of those point on 3-point baskets.  Though no others were in double figures, all Maroon players contributed scoring in the win.  Clinton is now 9-6 for the season and 1-1 in conference play.  After the game, Coach Haurberg had a lot of [praise for the team effort on defense, rebounding, and fighting through until the scoring began to come around.  The coach stated, “A really great team win tonight by our guys.”
