CLINTON — On Tuesday evening, January 4, the Maroons hosted the Le Roy Panthers for junior varsity (JV) and varsity games.
The initial JV game seemed doomed from the start for the Maroons, taking the tip off but then unable to capitalize on the move. By the end of the initial quarter, the Maroons were down by 6 points.
The following quarter the home team dropped only a single point and trailed the Panthers 21-14 at the half way point. The third quarter saw the Maroons out score the opposition but still 4 points short of the lead. But never say never.
An explosive fourth quarter comeback by the Maroons sealed the game 45-42 for the win.
The home team scored 17 points in the final round of play to win. Derek Filkin (#21) led the Maroons JV with 16 points (9 of which were in the fourth quarter), followed by Colton Walker with 10 points. The home team had seven players score in the game, while the visitors had four scorers.
The varsity Maroons struggled in the first quarter of their game, falling behind 13-4 to a visibly taller Panther team. They were able to right the ship in the second quarter to reach a 19-all tie score at halftime.
This appeared to be the last hoorah of the game as the opposition was up by five points at the end of three quarters and then closed the door on the Maroons in the fourth quarter to win by 9 points, 48-39.
The Maroons had just three players score in the game with Mason Walker (#3) leading the way with 21 points and eventually fouling out in the final stanza of the game.
