CLINTON — On Monday, the Clinton Maroons hosted the Washington (Ill.) Panthers on the home hardwood. This game was an eye-opening and learning experience for the Maroons.
The home team was caught flat-footed with their heads spinning as the first quarter closed with the Panthers in the lead 24-2. The Maroons scored only 2 points in the quarter.
The Panthers’ passes were crisp and their 3-pointers frequent and massive. They could shoot from anywhere. In the second quarter the Maroons finally cleared their heads and played within their abilities and game plan, actually outscoring the Panthers in this quarter and the third quarter. Then it happened, the Clinton train got stalled. The Panthers rallied, scoring 21 points in the final quarter, while holding Clinton scoreless.
The Panthers won 70-38. The Maroons also had numerous fouls, giving Washington extra access to point scoring. The Panthers were in double bonus free throws much of the evening.
