More than 100 smoke detectors installed

CLINTON — Commissioner Dan Ballenger says the fire department has installed a lot of smoke detectors with more yet to be installed.

The smoke detector installation for local residents has been part of the Clinton Fire Department’s annual fundraising effort.  As they’ve visited homes in Clinton, firefighters have checked to see if homeowners have operational detectors.

“It’s surprising to learn how many people in our area don’t have them,” Ballenger said during Monday’s city council meeting.

Through a grant program, the fire department is able to obtain 25 smoke detectors at a time.  Once those detectors are installed, they have to place orders for additional detectors.

“We have put in our fourth or fifth order,” Ballenger said.  “We put up a lot of smoke detectors, and people are still calling.”

That puts the number of smoke detectors installed by the department at about 100-125.

“It’s been a good program,” Ballenger said.
