Spencer’s Tree Relocation Service plants the first of five trees on the former Webster School property. A grant from the Elks Lodge made the project possible.
CLINTON — The city green space left by the demolition of Webster School received a few new trees recently thanks to a grant from the Clinton Elks Lodge.
Spencer Tree Relocation Service, Downs, Ill., delivered and planted the first of five trees on Friday morning, Dec. 8, a hard maple tree. Clinton Elks covered the cost of the trees with a $2,000 Elks Foundation grant.
In all, three hard maple trees and two red oaks were planted on Friday.
“It’s really a great thing,” said Terry Ferguson, Elks member in charge of grants.
Ferguson said the Clinton Elks Lodge also was able to give a $2,000 grant earlier this year to the C.H. Moore Homestead DeWitt County Museum.
Present for the first tree-planting on Dec. 8 were Ferguson, Bob Van Appeldoorn, the Elks exhalted ruler, and Tim Followell, Clinton city administrator. Husband and wife team, the Spencers, owners of Spencer Tree Relocation, delivered and planted the trees.
Ferguson said the local Boy Scouts were scheduled to put down some mulch once the trees were in the ground.
Webster School was replaced by the new Clinton Elementary School, which opened in August 2014.
