Revolution over Stix 6-4 in ‘Midwest Slugfest’

Posted

CLINTON — In the past few years, the Midwest Slugfest, held in Decatur, has also spread out to other facilities and communities to host baseball games, since  there are too many to play all the games at the available Decatur venues.

Clinton has become one of those go-to communities with Evans Field again hosting games this past Saturday and Sunday (June 17 and 18).  This is the fifth year for the Slugfest where 16 teams from around the Midwest compete in head to head competition.

In the past, teams from eight states have been in the competition.  Clinton is also fortunate to have had its own Central Illinois Revolution playing in the initial game of Session I of the Slugfest here in Clinton.

There will be three more sessions in the on the next three consecutive weekends.  The Midwest Slugfest is growing by leaps and bounds.

The Revolution (4-7) were pitted in the scheme of the schedule against the Illinois Stix - Case (17-0) of Cary, Illinois in the first game held in Clinton this year.  The game looked bleak for the Revolution at the start as the Stix scored two runs in both the first and second innings.

The Revolution pitching then got stingy, allowing no more runs to the Stix.  Next it was up to the offense to kick in some help, which they did.

In the fourth inning, with one on, Lane Mayfield hit a triple to score one run.  Mayfield scored a couple of batters later on a fly ball to left field and was followed by Parker West scoring on a double by Drew Stacey.  This flurry brought the Revolution to within one run of the Stix and forced the Stix to change pitchers.  In the fifth inning, Mayfield continued his lightening speed act by hitting an inside-the-park homerun to tie the game at four runs apiece.

As time wound down, the game went into an extra inning, where the Revolution used some heads up play to convert twice and then hold the Stix for a 6-4 win.

Unfortunately, this was the only win of the tournament for the Revolution.

There are three more consecutive weekends of competition in the Midwest Slugfest V schedule.
