School board approves mandatory technology class

Posted

CLINTON — After a brief discussion, Clinton school board members approved a new mandatory semester long technology class for freshmen at Clinton High School, starting this fall.

“We want them to be more adept in using technology devices but we also want them to be able to master the applications that go along with it,” explained Superintendent Curt Nettles.

“We believe our freshmen need more instruction in technology going forward,” he continued. “They will spend time on their (Microsoft) Surfaces; they’ll spend time on other devices. We’d also like them to be better with the applications that go along with that so they’re better at research and using the software.”

Nettles said CHS principal Jerry Wayne worked with a team of teachers, including retiring technology teacher Dorothy Harrold, to create the class syllabus.

“Based on technology in our lives today,” said board member John Blythe, “there’s not a kid coming into high school who wouldn’t benefit from taking a class to make sure they’re better at managing technology.”

In other business, the board:

• Heard a presentation on Common Core Standard Initiatives from Clinton Elementary School third grade teachers Erika Kennedy and Trisha Bostic.

• Learned the state of Illinois still owes the district $477,352.

• Learned CHS graduation will be Sunday, May 20 at 2 p.m. The date for CJHS graduation will be announced at a later date.

• Approved the employment of Beth Pine as CHS secretary beginning this month.

• Approved the temporary employment of Susan Duling through the end of the school year.
