School board discusses learn-at -home option

CLINTON — With only four board members present, the Clinton school board listened to Superintendent Curt Nettles explain that the district was waiting for guidance from the state board of education regarding e-learning or at-home learning days for the upcoming school year.

“The state board is supposed to give us some guidance on how we’re supposed to go about doing this,” said Nettles.

Many school districts in the area converted snow days to e-learning or at-home learning days last school year in an effort to avoid extending the school calendar in the spring.

“My recommendation is that we only trade two or three, at the most, at-home learning days. I don’t want to trade (the students) being at home for actually being with a teacher for all five days.”

Clinton High School Principal Jerry Wayne explained at the high school level students can access Google classroom for assignments. Clinton Junior High Principal Josh Maxwell agreed, adding in most circumstances they will have an idea if bad weather might cause school cancellation and prepare accordingly.

In addition, all agreed the policy will have to accommodate those students who can’t get the assignments done for a variety of reasons.

Nettles said part of the policy would address how much time students have to complete the at-home assignments in these situations.

“We don’t want it to be a case of the haves or have-nots,” he said, referencing those students who may not have the same access and accommodations as others.

In other business, the board:

• Cancelled the July board meeting.

• Approved the employment of the following people: Tracer Mills, assistant golf coach; Jim McCormick, special education vocational transition teacher; Rayna Kaufman, CHS secretary; Daniel Kizior, 5th grade teacher; Tracer Mills and Nicole Barber, 7th grade girls’ basketball coaches;  Lynn Norris, Flag sponsor; Tracy Wassom and April Prothero, CJHS kitchen staff; Rebecca Bishop, CES reading specialists; Alie Haesele, CHS study hall supervisor and CHS softball coach; Jessica Tuttle, CJHS lead secretary;  and Megan Barth, CJHS aide.
