Teams in a slump during inconsistent season

CLINTON — The Clinton Lady Maroons are in the doldrums.

They have been on a five- game losing streak that threatens their season.  The freshman team is holding its own, mostly splitting 2-set matches with their opponents.

However, the junior varsity (JV) and varsity teams are struggling mightily in this part of the season.  Even on Senior Night, April 5, the teams could not win in close matches.

It all began on March 29, a Saturday, during which the JV team won and the varsity lost in three sets to the Martinsville Lady Blue Streaks.  From there, the teams met the Riverton Lady Hawks who shredded the home teams’ defenses.

Then, came the Shelbyville Lady Rams, who also had no problem with the Lady Maroons, winning one set 25-5.

Next on the home court agenda was the Central A&M Lady Raiders who arrived looking to bludgeon the home teams.  They were surprised by a Clinton JV win in 3 sets but found their treasure in a varsity win over the Lady Maroons.

Finally, on Senior Night, the Lady Indians, from  the small southern Illinois town of Altamont, sent their raiding party into Vance Gymnasium and took away the night which should have been a bright spot in the seniors time here at Clinton High School.

The home team battled for as long as they could but again fell short of victory.

There have been some glimmers of hope for the future as the freshman team has had some success.  There have also been some good plays and volleys by the other teams.
