Tough road losses for Maroons’ baseball but big wins at home

Posted

CLINTON — The Clinton Maroons have had their ups and downs so far early in the season.  The main problem has been practice and game experience.

Spring weather has brought a lot of rain, which means less practice on the field and more rained out games.  But, the team has had some very good break out games.

The first game of the season was away facing the ever tough Mahomt-Seymour Bulldogs.

The Bulldogs drew first blood in the first inning with one run but cut loose with a 6-run barrage in the sixth that buried the Maroons.  The Maroons had taken a short lead in the top of the fourth inning on two runs.

Clinton added one more run in the fifth and the Bulldogs capped off their scoring with two runs in the 6th.  The Bulldogs went on to win 9-3.

Following the big loss to Mahomet-Seymour, the Maroons headed home for their home opening double-header against the Ridgeview (Colfax) Mustangs.

These were good games for a home opener as the Maroons settled in, taking the early lead in both contests and letting their bats and gloves do the work.

Clinton took the opener 5-1 and blasted the Mustangs home with an 11-1 win in the closing game.  This brought the Maroon season to a 2-1 record.

Then after a tough home loss (3-1) to the Tuscola Warriors, the Maroons headed south to the home of the Central A&M Raiders, where the Maroons laid waste to the Raiders, scoring 11 runs on six hits while Michael Oswald pitched a no hitter, striking out 11 batters.

Clinton won 11-0 and went to 3-2 overall and 1-1 in conference play.  This was followed by another huge home win (13-5), over the St. Teresa Bulldogs.

The Maroons then went back on the road, where they again began to struggle.  The first match-up was no match at all as the Champaign Centennial Chargers charged away and took the game 11-0.

From there, the Maroons headed south again to meet the Shelbyville Rams.  The game was all Rams as they took the lead on 2 runs and then added four more in the sixth.  Clinton scored a run in the 6th and again in the 7th but couldn’t catch the Rams.

The Maroons had six hits on the day but got no one across home plate.

The Maroons are now 4-4 on the season and 2-2 in conference play.
