Tough start for Lady Maroons volleyball

Posted

CLINTON — On Tuesday, August 28, Clinton High School entered the 2018-19 volleyball season.

Their first opponent was the El Paso/Gridley Lady Titans.  And the visitors lived up to their moniker.  All three levels (freshmen, junior varsity, and varsity)played this evening and it was a learning experience for the Lady Maroons.

After graduating their tall players last year, the varsity has little in height on the front line, and the players on all levels are still finding their niche on the team.

The first match pitted the freshman squads in two sets.  The first went to the Lady Maroons by a slim margin of 25-22, and then being totally dominated in the second set 9-25.

Next on the program was the junior varsity match, which was not close as the Lady Titans won in straight sets 25-9 and 25-18.

The varsity squad was somewhat better having played together for a few years, however, the Lady Titans offensive height advantage was obvious as they hammered kill shots and spikes all throughout the match.

The Lady Titans took the final match 25-14 and 25-20.  The Lady Maroons will need to work on their defense of teams with much taller squads as seen with El Paso/Gridley.

The opposition had several members at 6 foot or above and were controlling the front line from both sides and at times the middle also.

The next opponent for the Lady Maroons are the Lady Lions of the Decatur Lutheran School Association.
