Tuition waiver possible to attract new staff


School board looks for ways to address teacher shortage

CLINTON — Hiring and retaining good employees is currently a struggle in nearly every industry these days and education is no exception. 

For that reason, the Clinton school board discussed the possibility of waiving the out-of-area tuition charges for teachers and staff living outside the district boundaries. 

Superintendent Curt Nettles said he has “warmed up” to the idea over the years because “now we have a massive shortage of quality employees, whether they’re teachers or support staff. I think this might be used as a good recruiting tool to get good staff members and retain them.” 

“I think it would be a great recruitment tool,” agreed Clinton Elementary School principal Sacha Young. “I think it (will appeal) to the parents of little kids who want to continue working here and are finding it a hardship to find before and after school day care for their child.” 

Board member Rodney Rogers expressed concern about the waiver for families who don’t pay taxes to the district.
