CLINTON — The 50th Honor Flight with armed forces veterans and their guardians occurred on Tuesday, June 19. The flights take those who wish to participate and have signed up to Washington, D.C. for a day of visiting national sights along with visiting the war memorials.
On this particular flight, two local veterans were included, Jim Barnett of Clinton and Nelson Thorpe of Wapella. Both men were very appreciative of being able to experience the sites of the nations capital, but were equally impressed by the number of local people who were waiting for them here at home.
Most Vietnam war veterans received little or no greeting when returning home, or received very distasteful returns. Jim Barnett spent his tour of duty with the U.S. Army, while Nelson Thorpe took the route of the U.S. Marine Corps.
The local veterans associations expressed their gratitude to those who support these veterans and give them their well deserved welcome home.
There were 15 veterans present from all branches of the services and over 50 family, friends and others present at this returning of the two veterans from our area.
