CLINTON — The Clinton Color Guard recently presented 8th grade social studies teacher Kelbey McMath with a $1,000 donation for the “Good Cemeterian Project.”
The “Good Cemeterian Project” allows 8th grade students the opportunity to research a local Civil War veteran using primary and secondary sources and to create a project based on the veteran’s life.
Afterwards, the students travel to the cemetery to clean the gravestone of the veteran(s) they studied, using specialized cleaner and a lot of patience.
“This generous donation will ensure the success of the project for years to come,” McMath said. “The donation will allow for the purchase of the cleaner and other related materials needed to properly clean and preserve the headstones.”
McMath made a presentation of the project to all interested veterans at the American Legion in August and said he looks forward to inviting local veterans’ groups to the cemetery when the students travel there to clean more grave stones.
