BLOOMINGTON — Phyllis Ann Carstens, 88, of Bloomington, passed away at 6:20 a.m. on October 31, 2024, at McLean County Nursing Home, Normal.
John Martin Carstens, 91, Phyllis’s husband, passed away at 2:53 a.m. on October 19, 2023, at McLean County Nursing Home, Normal.
Graveside services for Phyllis will be conducted at 12 p.m. on Saturday, November 9, 2024, at Weldon Cemetery, Weldon, with Fr. Thomas Szydlik officiating. The family entrusted Calvert Funeral Home, Clinton, with arrangements.
Services for John were conducted at 12 p.m. on Monday, October 23, 2023, at the Calvert Funeral Home, Clinton, with Pastor Tiffany Black and Fr. Thomas Szydlik officiating. Burial with military honors was at Weldon Cemetery, Weldon. Visitation was from 11 a.m.-12 p.m. on Monday, October 23, 2023, at the funeral home.
Memorials may be directed to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
Phyllis was born on June 16, 1936, in Cisco, Ill., the daughter of Melvin E. and Dorothy (Evey) Long.
John was born on October 3, 1932, in Grinnell, Iowa, the son of Henry J. and Nora L. (Toohill) Carstens. They were married on September 6, 1958, at St. John’s Catholic Church, in Clinton.
Survivors include Phyllis’s brother, Larry (Linda) Long, Leesburg, Fla.
They were preceded in death by their parents and Phyllis’s brother, Phillip Long.
Phyllis graduated from the St. Joseph Nursing School in 1958 as a Registered Nurse. She was a nurse at Verizon in Bloomington for 23 years. Phyllis was a former member of the American Association of Occupational Health Nurses (State and Central Illinois Past President) as well as the Past President of the McLean Co. Heart Association.
John was a U.S. Army veteran, serving his country 1953–1955. He was a member of the American Legion, V.F.W., Masonic Lodge #48 and the Bloomington Consistory. He worked for State Farm Insurance Company as an accountant, retiring after 28 years of service.
