A really big fish story

CLINTON— Jonathan Inman had to leave behind temporarily what he knew was a really big fish.  So, early morning on May 24, Inman put a stringer through his catch and left it in the water along the Clinton Lake bank near the DeWitt bridge with plans to pick it up later.

He hoped no one would discover the fish, and he was relieved to find it still where he left it when he returned a few hours later.

The possible state record drum perch was too large for any certified scale in the Clinton area to handle.  Conservation Officer John Williamson accompanied Inman to Decatur to have the fish weighed.  No local certified scales could handle more than 30 pounds.  Inman’s fish weighed in at 38 pounds.  A state biologist must take samples and certify the record.  The current record was set in 1958.
