MAROA — A man from Kenney died Friday night in a single-vehicle accident west of Maroa, according to Macon County Coroner Michael Day.
William Shane Peterson, 41, was westbound on Washington Street, Maroa, near Lake Fork Lane, when his vehicle left the roadway, hit a culvert and then struck a utility pole, rolling and bursting into flames, according to authorities.
The coroner pronounced Peterson dead at the scene at 10 p.m.
Peterson sustained severe head and chest trauma before the vehicle was engulfed by the fire. Peterson’s wife also was in the vehicle and was transported to the hospital by ambulance, authorities reported.
A nearby motorist stopped and helped Peterson’s wife escape from the fire but was not able to help Peterson, the coroner reported.
A coroner’s inquest is pending.
