Wapella money and safe remain missing

WAPELLA — At a “regular” board meeting held more than a week after the previously scheduled meeting failed to meet a quorum, the Village of Wapella received a report from Village Clerk Lauren Johnson regarding money recently reported missing from the village.
Johnson was unable to attend the meeting, but her written report stated on March 3 she learned $300 cash was missing from the village office as well as one resident’s personal check. Johnson said she immediately filed a police report with the DeWitt County Sheriff’s office and notified the village’s attorney, Steve Mahrt.
“Under further inspection, at least an additional $140 is currently unaccounted for, and a fireproof safe,” the report read.
Johnson’s report also said she has been in contact with the sheriff’s department and, to her knowledge, “the investigation is currently ongoing. “
On Friday, DeWitt County Sheriff’s Detective Nikolas Hubrich said the case had been “closed” but the money had not been recovered.
In other business, the village board announced no late fees would be assessed to residents due to the illegibility of the water bills sent out last month. According to Johnson’s report, a printing problem caused the bills to be unreadable.
