Blooming kindness

Emily Haubner is sharing joy and kindness with her Clinton neighbors by simply sharing her flowers with others.

Periodically, Haubner sets out vases of colorful flowers on her front walk with a large sign reading, “FREE FLOWERS.”

The kindness of sharing her flowers with others began while Haubner, a former elementary teacher, who is currently staying home with her 7-month-old, was picking flowers for her home.

“One day, I thought about how much joy (the flowers) bring me, and I wanted to share that with others,” said Haubner.

“I used to tell my students how much simple acts of kindness can turn someone’s day around.” Haubner wants to instill that same trait in her son as he joins her, while she picks the flowers and arranges them in the jars.

Free vases come with the vibrant blooms thanks to Haubner’s love of thrifting, plus neighbor donations and Haubner’s crafting stash.

The flowers go so quickly, Haubner hasn’t had the opportunity to see anyone take them, but she has had recipients send her thank you messages and photos of where they put their flowers.

When she has flowers to donate, Haubner places the flowers on the walk in front of her West Main Street home with a large “Free Flowers” sign and then shares a photo on local Facebook pages “so more people can see.”

Haubner said she hopes to continue bringing flowers and smiles to her Clinton neighbors as long as she has blooms available.

“It’s a fun activity for us that brings me joy, and I hope it’s doing that for others as well.”
