MAHOMET — A law firm representing families affected by a Dec. 2016 natural gas leak into the Mahomet Aquifer has scheduled an Oct. 16 informational meeting at Newcomb Township Hall, located near Mahomet.
The wells of at least five Mahomet, Ill. homes was contaminated in 2016 when natural gas from a local natural gas supplier leaked into the ground.
Employees at the underground gas storage facility noticed natural gas on the ground surface near one of its wells in early Dec. 2016. The well was plugged with concrete about a week later. It is not known how long the leak continued before being discovered or how much gas escaped, according to the law firm based on information from Peoples Gas.
The Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) issued a notice of violation on Sept. 14, 2017. The IDNR directed the gas company to complete remedial actions to prevent the loss of recoverable gas and “abate damage to fresh water and property.”
Some homeowners reported gas levels were so high that their tap water was flammable.
The Mahomet Aquifer provides fresh water to a large portion of communities and rural areas in east central Illinois, which includes Clinton and DeWitt County.
