CHARLESTON — The Lady Maroons tuned up for the state outdoor finals by having several of the team in the Pantagraph Honor Roll Meet, which will be no longer after years of success. The following were the Maroons entered:
Tori Burke - 3rd in 100 meter dash
7th in 200 meter dash
Payne Turney - 6th in 400 meter dash
1st in 800 meter run
2nd in 1600 meter run
2nd in 3200 meter run
Mallory Cyrulik - 1st in 100 meter hurdles
1st in 300 meter hurdles
Riley Pruser - 6th in high jump
Olivia Earl - 8th in pole vault
Claudia Workman - 2nd in shot put
Kady Patelski - 8th in shot put
And, teams from Clinton were 3rd in the 800-meter relays and fifth in the 1600 meter relays.
Then, it was on to the state semifinals, and the finals was where Payne Turney took the show for the Lady Maroons by winning the gold (1st place) in the 800-meter run and becoming the first Lady Maroon to win a state championship in Clinton’s history. She was in the lead from start to finish or “wire to wire.”
Payne also made it to the finals in the 1600 meter run, but ended in 11th place, while running a personal best time and setting a new school record. She was quoted as saying “my mind told me yes, but my body told me no.” Other Lady Maroons at state who were in semifinals:
Olivia Earl - pole vault
Jackie Green - pole vault
Mallory Cyrulik - 100 meter hurdles (top 9 qualify - Mallory was 11th) - 300 meter hurdles (top 9 qualify - Mallory was10th)
Tori Burke - 100 meter dash
4 x 400 meter relay - Mallory Cyrulik, Hadley Wilson, Tori Burke, Payne Turney
4 x 800 meter relay - Hadley Wilson, Olivia Petersen, Clare Holland, Aryn Scott
