Big home wins start CHS Maroons season

CLINTON — The hometown Clinton Maroons began the season at home by hosting three meets.

At the top of the bill was the Prairie Central Hawks.  This dual meet began well with Clinton up a few points through the middle of the meet.  At this point, one of the opposition grapplers lost control and slammed into a gymnasium door in disgust, which immediately cost his team a one point deduction for unsportsmanlike conduct.

The interruption was brief, thus, the match continued with back and forth tussles.  The match, however, became close nearing the end of the evening.  When the final tally was made, the win went to the hometown Maroons by a score of  33-32.  The conduct of one athlete had apparently cost Prairie Central a tie or possible win.

Next on the home mat was another dual meet, this with the Mahomet-Seymour Bulldogs.  Although bulldogs are supposed to be tenacious animals, these Bulldogs were found to be quite tamable.  The Maroons took 10 of 16 matches and seven of those by pins. The Maroons rolled to an impressive 42-24 win.

In the last of the home stands, a triangular meet was held with the Lincoln Railsplitters and the Fort Zumwalt North Panthers.  First on the mats were the Maroons and the Panthers.

The Maroons took nine of 13 matches, six of which were pins.  This started the Maroons evening with a 49-22 win.  The second round of matches pitted Lincoln against the Panthers.  After losing to Clinton and expending all that energy, one would expect Lincoln to have an advantage.  Not so in this case.

Fort Zumwalt rallied against the Railsplitters for a huge 60-18 win.  After seeing these results, the Maroons felt good going into the third round of matches on the night.  Lincoln would not go down without a tussle, however.

Clinton did maintain the upper hand winning 9 of 13 matches including 6 pins.  The Maroons won 54-24 to have a 2-0 record on the night.  The Fort Zumwalt North Panthers were second with a 1-1 record and the Lincoln Railsplitters ended with an0-2 record.
